Is 409A really your model number? Most Presto cookers and canners will have a 409A stamped into the bottom of the pot (in the center). This is not the model number. 409A notes that this pressure canner or cooker was built and meets the listed Underwriters Laboratory (UL) standards for safe household pressure cooking and canning. If you see a 409A chances are it is NOT your model number. Please look at the side on the pot below the pot handle for your model number. A long time ago there was a Presto 409A model and it takes a "flat gasket" about 1/8" thick and fits a small 4-quart pot.

Before you use it: quick check

  • Check the sealing ring. Replace it if it is hard, cracked or stretched, or if steam leaks around the lid.
  • Replace the overpressure plug or air vent at the same time as the gasket.
  • Hold the lid up to the light and make sure the vent pipe is clear. Use a cleaning rod.
