Old pressure cooker brands

Presto / National

Presto and National are the same company. National Pressure Cooker Company canners (No. 5, 7, 8, 14, 39) came first. The company became National Presto Industries in 1953. Classic Presto cookers include the 40, 60, 403, 404, 406, 603, 604 and the 409A.

Mirro / Mirro-Matic

Made in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Mirro-Matic cookers go back to the late 1940s (M-0392, M-0394, M-0396). Older Mirro canners (M-0406, M-0512 12 qt, M-0522 22 qt) use the round "jiggler" weight.

Magic Seal (Montgomery Ward)

Montgomery Ward's store brand. Many Magic Seal canners were made by Presto and take Presto parts. For example, the 7-16 uses the Presto 9907 sealing ring.

Sears / Maid of Honor

Sears' house brands. Model numbers usually start with 620 (for example 620-4600016). A number stamped like "146" can be a date code (1946).

All American

Made in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The metal-to-metal seal means no gasket. Older canners with a petcock, and the vintage All American No. 7, still take many current parts.

How to identify a vintage pressure cooker or canner

  1. Find the stamp. Check the bottom of the pot, the lid, and near the handles for a model number or brand.
  2. Look at the top. A dial gauge and a vent pipe usually mean an old Presto or National canner. A round jiggler weight usually means Mirro. Wing-nut clamps around the edge with no gasket mean All American.
  3. Measure the gasket or lid. Measure across the old gasket, or the inside of the lid, and compare with our gasket chart.
  4. Get the manual. See our free manuals.

Before you use an old canner

  • Check the lid and rim for warping, deep dents or cracks. Don't use a cracked canner.
  • Replace the gasket and the overpressure plug or air vent; old rubber hardens.
  • Clear the vent pipe with a cleaning rod.
  • Have any dial gauge tested for accuracy, or replace it.
  • See the parts diagram for what each part does.

Vintage pressure cooker questions

How do I find the model number on an old pressure cooker?

Look on the bottom of the pot, on the lid, or on the side near a handle. It is usually stamped into the metal. Older Presto and National canners show it as a number like 7, 7B or 21B; Mirro uses numbers like M-0512-11.

Can I still get parts for an old pressure cooker or canner?

Often yes. Gaskets, regulators, overpressure plugs, gauges and handles are still made for many Presto, National, Mirro, Magic Seal and All American models from the 1940s on. Use the model number lookup to see what fits.

Are old pressure canners safe to use?

They can be if they are in good condition. Check that the lid and rim are not warped or cracked, replace the gasket and overpressure plug, clear the vent pipe, and have any dial gauge tested for accuracy before canning.

What are the old pressure cooker brands?

Common older brands include Presto and National, Mirro and Mirro-Matic, Magic Seal (Montgomery Ward), Sears and Maid of Honor, All American, Wear-Ever, Kook-Kwick, Co-op and Steamliner.

What if my old pressure cooker has no model number?

Email clear photos of the pot, the lid (top and underside) and any stamps to cs@redhillgeneralstore.com, or call 1.800.251.8824. We will try to match it.
